Improving quality and holistic TVET programs in the Hospitality Sector to Enhance Progressive Career Pathways for the marginalized youth in Tanzania Project

Project Summary: The project strategically targets to resolve problems of the deficiencies in skilled manpower in the hospitality sector. Through the implementation of certified training programs (CTPs), the project aspires to empower the youth with specialized skill sets tailored to the intricate demands of the hospitality sector. By furnishing them with industry-recognized certifications, the project aims to furnish individuals with the requisite expertise to navigate the multifaceted realms of the hospitality industry with confidence and proficiency. By fostering the growth and proficiency of the workforce, the project envisages a cascading effect on the tourism sector, catalyzing its expansion and enhancing its overall competitiveness on both regional and global scales. Ultimately, the project’s overarching ambition is to reinforce Tanzania’s position as a premier tourist destination, characterized by supreme service excellence and visitor satisfaction. This inaugural group of students is being trained with the latest resources and methodologies made possible by the project’s developments, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s growth and operational capabilities.

Technical and Pedagogical Training for Technicians and Vocational Teachers: Improving the Quality of Vocational Training in Dodoma, Tanzania Project

  Project Summary: The project aims to develop institutional infrastructure, achieve institutional accreditation, and establish a digital platform to support online learning. The primary focus is on the first phase of establishing DBTTC, which includes building infrastructure and covering operational expenses to ensure smooth institutional operations. Objective 01:  A new technical college is established and has all the needed infrastructure and equipment in order to get full accreditation and registration for five courses by NACTE. Objective 02: Highly qualified faculty and staff members are teaching at and managing the DBTTC, laying a strong foundation for a strong independent institution. Objective 03:  DBTTC produces highly qualified technicians with the right mix of theoretical and practical knowledge and skills targeted to the needs of the private industry and contributes to diminishing the skills gap of young people nationwide. Objective 04: DBTTC has established partnerships with reputable companies/industries in different sectors and is known for the quality of their students during their field attachments. Objective 05: An innovative, creative, and flexible digital education platform including five digitalized NACTE-approved curricula is established. The project is scheduled to be completed in October 2024 but given the availability of a budget and unachievement of some indicators, there is a discussion to request a no-cost project extension to finalize the anticipated milestones and exhaust the project budget.

Empowering Tanzanian Youth through Enhanced Technical Training at Don Bosco KIITEC, Arusha, Tanzania Project

  Project Summary: The empowering Tanzanian Youth through enhanced Technical Training project at KIITEC is a project designed to enhance DB KIITEC’s vision of becoming a center of Excellence. The project primarily focuses on i) enhancing infrastructure and equipment by developing the first phase of the construction (developing architectural and structural designs, expansion of the solar system, renewal and modernization of tools and Equipment, ii) capacity building which entails the Training of teachers and Peer exchanges with DB Ghana as well as iii) Promoting Innovation by the establishment of an innovation lab to provide space and support for the development of innovative projects and ideas at KIITEC. Objective 01:  To elevate the quality and relevance of TVET education at Don Bosco KIITEC to meet the specified standards and industry requirements. Objective 02: To enhance access and equity in STEM-focused TVET provision for marginalized and underprivileged youth and admission numbers at DB KIITEC. ProFuturo Project

  Project Summary: ProFuturo Is a digital education program funded by the Telefónica Foundation and ¨la Caixa¨ Foundation. With a mission of narrowing the education gap in the world by improving the quality of education of millions of boys and girls throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. ProFuturo is in 40 countries all around the world. It is in 17 countries in Africa (namely: Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe. Five projects were implemented in 2017, reaching 47 public and private schools in the following regions: Dar Es Salam, Morogoro, Dodoma, Moshi, and Mafinga-Iringa. ProFuturo decided to expand the scope of the program. In 2018, equipment and training materials were delivered to an additional 50 private and public schools in Kilimanjaro, Songea, and Zanzibar. To date the project ProFuturo is in 95 schools in Tanzania. Just about 0.5% of primary schools in Tanzania. ProFuturo does this by ensuring that schools receive, technological equipment & a learning Platform, and training for teaching communities i.e., schools. Average monthly days of use per student (median) is 1.28, a decrease of 0.10 from the previous quarter. Number of monthly activities carried out by students (median) is 2.19, a decrease of 0.72 from the previous quarter. In conclusion, the targets for student engagement are not being met, as there is a decrease in both the usage days and activities. Focused strategies to re-engage students are necessary. Teacher Motivation and Support: A High percentage of teachers perceiving benefits of technology, reporting improved motivation, and feeling supported by management. In a survey conducted last year 99.41% of teachers perceive that technology improves learning. 73.79% of teachers report an improvement in motivation. 89.36% of teachers feel supported by their school management. In conclusion, the targets for teacher motivation and support are being met successfully. Most teachers are motivated and feel that technology is beneficial and supported by their management teams. Implementation and Maintenance of Solutions: The aim is to Increase the number of activated solutions (servers) and reduce the percentage of damaged, unused, or stolen solutions (servers). Currently, the Cumulative total of activated solutions(servers) is 202, an increase of 2 from the previous quarter. Number of activated solutions(servers) in Q1 2024 is 159, an increase of 1 from the previous quarter. 7.82% of solutions are damaged, unused, or stolen, with 19 such solutions, and no change from the previous quarter. The target for activating solutions (server) is being met with incremental progress. However, the target for reducing damaged, unused, or stolen solutions is not being met as the figures remain unchanged. Active Participation: The target is to increase the percentage and number of active students and teachers. Monthly % of active students is 16.55, a decrease of 2.80. Monthly median of active teachers is 149, an increase of 5. Quarterly % of teachers with activity is 21.03, an increase of 5.21. In conclusion, While the target for increasing active teachers is being met, the target for active students is not being met due to the decrease in their participation.

Skills Development, Social dialogue and decent jobs for young Tanzanians Project

Project Summary: The TVET Project aims to equip Tanzanian graduates from technical colleges and vocational training institutions with practical skills for private-sector employment. Currently, less than 2% of female and 4% of male workers have received vocational training, due to a historic focus on academic education, a disconnect between training institutions and the private sector, and high tuition fees. The project targets youth aged 18-35 and is implemented by the Association of Tanzanian Employers (ATE), the National Trade Union Confederation (TUCTA), and selected TVET institutions, in collaboration with Danish organizations. The project’s long-term goal is to align vocational training with industry demands, enhancing the employability of young graduates. Specifically, ATE and TUCTA aim to provide quality, demand-responsive skills training to improve job opportunities for young people, fostering collective social and economic growth. The specific outcomes of this project include; -Improved demand-driven TVET system with social partners promoting TVET training that accommodates current and future skills needed; -Companies and workers contribute to a modernized learning environment with flexible work-based learning (for apprentices and teachers), and -Skilled young people and workers are competent with mechanical and electrical skills in demand by private companies (particularly in the agro-industry). Key milestones of the project: 292 youth have been trained, 6 teachers have been offered industrial training for upgrading their knowledge and modern technologies in the industries. Our teachers were involved in curriculum development. Don Bosco has played key role in success planning and implementation of the project. 4 signed MoUs with associations of different sectors, Tea industry, Horticulture industry, Hotels Industry and confederation of Tanzania Industries. Don Bosco has been selected for the 2nd upcoming implementing project for a year’s term. Official communication is to be made later.

USAID Kijana Nahodha Project

Project Summary: The Kijana Nahodha project is designed to increase the empowerment, productivity, and community engagement of youth as its main purpose. The targeted population is out-of-school youth aged 15-25; Unemployed youth, Youth with disabilities, Young mothers, and those living in urban, peri-urban, and rural Districts. The project duration is 4 years. It is implemented in Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, and Zanzibar regions. The project is implemented on a consortium partnerships basis, with T-Mark Tanzania being the prime partner, Care International sub-partner, and training institutions as implementing partners. The implementing partners are selected according to the area of their expertise. Don Bosco being a TVET provider institution is engaged in the project through the first objective of the Kijana Nahodha project. The project focuses on three areas of intervention as stipulated in the objectives below: The Project Objectives: Increase access to educational, life, and entrepreneurial skills among youth Mental Health, Physical and Psychosocial Support Youth Led Organizations. Key milestones of the project: 107 youth have been trained, TOT for teachers have been offered training delivery skills and upgrading their knowledge on gender inclusivity in TVET provision. The project is in enrollment of the second cohort of the second batch to reach 100 students by the end of September 2024. The project still going up to 2026. So far the project is going well though there are a few challenges such as too many delays and improper flow of communication all these from the other end need to be addressed for the health of the project implementation. Otherwise is a good avenue to reach many needier youths.

Skills for Emplyment Tanzania Project

Project Segment at DBYTC: Empowering Young Women through Tailoring and Batik Making for Sustainable Income.   Project Summary: The Skills for Employment Tanzania (SET) project, implemented by Swiss contact and funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), enhances Tanzanian youth employability through vocational skills development in agriculture, hospitality, and manufacturing. Incorporating technical training, life skills, and entrepreneurship education, SET aligns its curriculum with market demands through continuous labor market analysis. In 2024, SET expanded to the Iringa region, partnering with the Don Bosco Youth Training Centre (DBYTC) to train 200 young mothers in tailoring and batik-making. The training, divided into two six-month batches, includes project mobilization, skills training, field placement, and business support. As the first batch completes their training, preparations for the second batch are underway. The project’s success is marked by strong participant and team commitment, with potential for extension based on continued achievements. Project Objective: To empower less privileged young mothers aged 15-24 in Iringa through comprehensive training in sewing and batik making, coupled with life skills and entrepreneurship education. In collaboration with stakeholders and an experienced team, the project aims to foster entrepreneurship and sustainable income among participants. Expected Project Outcomes: Skilled young mothers in tailoring, batik making, life skills, and entrepreneurship. Enhanced sustainable income streams of young mothers through established tailoring workshops and post-training business support. Fredrick Swai, Cassian Bilikwija, and Joseph Ngomite. Current Status: The project is currently in the skills training stage for the first batch of 100 students whereby one month remaining. So far, the students have mastered sewing skirts, gowns, and shirts. In the remaining month, they will focus on mastering the sewing of shorts, trousers, and batik making. Overall, the progress of the project is highly satisfactory. Batch two is expected to start in August and end their training in October. The overall project is expected to end in December 2024.

Improve Livelihoods of Disadvantaged Youth Through Crop Production and Horticulture Training at Don Bosco Youth Training Center (DBYTC) Project

  Project Summary This project aims to empower 100 to 150 disadvantaged youth annually, aged 15 to 25, through comprehensive training in crop production and horticulture at the Don Bosco Youth Training Center. Situated in the Iringa region, the center will provide both theoretical and practical training, targeting young people from rural areas of Iringa and neighboring regions, where agriculture is a primary economic activity but youth engagement is low due to traditional farming methods and climate change impacts. The project is designed to revitalize the agricultural economy in the southern highlands of Tanzania, reducing rural-urban migration by equipping youths with modern farming skills and entrepreneurial capabilities. By fostering a new generation of agricultural entrepreneurs, the initiative aims to improve agricultural productivity, increase incomes, enhance food security, and ultimately reduce poverty in the region. Project Main Objective: To inspire and equip disadvantaged youth with modern agricultural skills and entrepreneurial capabilities to enhance their livelihoods and reduce rural-urban migration. Project Outcomes: Improved agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods. Increased incomes of small-scale farmers. Enhanced food security. Reduced poverty. The second installment of funding is expected in July after the submission of the interim report. Upcoming activities include finishing the building, equipping it with necessary facilities, installing one greenhouse, and preparing an open farm field for practical student training. The project is on track and expected to conclude in December, with progress being highly satisfactory.

Apprenticeship Training Project (ATC)

Project Summary: The Apprenticeship Training Project, commonly referred to as ATC within the Don Bosco Framework, is a skills development initiative aligned with the government’s National Skills Development Programme (NSDP). Its primary emphasis lies in fostering the acquisition of employable skills among the national labor force, thereby augmenting workplace and industrial productivity. The NSDP strategically employs apprenticeship, internship, and recognition of prior learning (RPL) methodologies to effectively realize its overarching goals. Don Bosco, distinguished among 43 public and private institutions, actively participates in this project, aspiring to positively impact and empower a total of 706 youth out of the 6,000 Tanzanian youth primarily benefiting from the project. The project’s key objectives include; Objective 01:  To provide quality training and apprenticeship program for 706 marginalized youth seeking to transform their lives through TVET training by October 2024. Objective 02: To increase employability and labor mobility of 706 marginalized youths through certification of skills acquired through basic certification training by October 2024. Objective 03: Enhancement of soft skills development in improving an individual’s interpersonal skills in the work environment to boost productivity by October 2024.
